Leadership Team

CEO

Mark Toland

Mark Toland is the CEO of MMI. Before joining the company, he served as the President and CEO of Corindus where he transformed the company into the industry leader in vascular robotics with the only approved system for coronary, peripheral, and neurovascular indications. The Siemens Healthineers acquisition of Corindus for $1.1 billion was the fifth largest medical technology acquisition of 2019. Prior to Corindus, Mark served as Senior Vice President of Boston Scientific, where he built the company’s global solutions business and led all aspects of the U.S. commercial team’s cardiovascular businesses, which represented approximately $4 billion in revenue. Mark brings over 25 years of medical device experience to MMI. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors for Moon Surgical; Cardiologs, a cardiovascular AI company that was acquired by global health technology leader, Philips, in 2021; and Amplitude Vascular Systems, an intravascular lithotripsy company. He also serves as a Managing Partner at BioStar Capital, a healthcare focused venture capital firm. Mr. Toland holds a BS in Business Administration from the University of Louisville.
VP, Legal & Human Resources

Jessica Dareneau

Jessica is the VP of Legal and Human Resources. She joined MMI in June 2022 with global responsibility for Legal, Human Resources, and Corporate Compliance. She previously served as Vice President of People and Associate General Counsel for Lumina Analytics and Artisight in the health tech and AI space where she developed strategy and led implementation for all aspects of human resources, culture, people and talent. In those roles, she was a key advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors on significant legal issues including compliance, privacy, IP and employment law. Jessica earned her BA from Flagler College and JD from Stetson University of Law.
VP, Quality & Regulatory Affairs

Mauro Ercolani

Mauro serves as VP Quality and Regulatory Affairs at MMI. In this role, Mauro is responsible for the quality system and the global regulatory strategy that leverages the clinical value of the robotic platform. Prior to joining MMI, Mauro served as a Director of Regulatory Affairs at LivaNova where he was responsible for global regulatory activities for the Cardiac Surgery Business Unit. He has a multidisciplinary technical background and deep experience in Regulatory Affairs. Mauro holds a MS in Nuclear Engineering from La Sapienza University in Rome.
VP, Program Management

Fabio Giorgi

Fabio is the VP of the Program Management Office. He oversees strategic, cross-functional projects that contribute to long-term business objectives. He joined MMI in March 2021 as R&D Program Manager with responsibility for directing cross-functional projects associated with new product development.

His previous experience with robotics companies includes R&D project leadership at Asensus Surgical and project management with strong quality and production collaboration at Sofar SpA. Fabio earned a MS in Computer Science and a PhD in Robotics from the University of Genova, Italy.

VP, Marketing & Business Development

Jeff LaConte

Jeff joined the company in April 2023 as VP of Marketing and Business Development overseeing worldwide marketing and innovation strategy. Previously, he led the global robotics, digital surgery, and augmented reality business for J&J's orthopedic business, DePuy Synthes. He and his team directed the development, brand creation, go-to-market and business strategy for the VELYS robotic solution, which quickly became one of the fastest growing robotic technologies in orthopedic history. Prior to DePuy, he held senior leadership roles across many Johnson & Johnson's businesses, including Ethicon, J&J Vision Care, and J&J Surgical Vision. Jeff's brand strategy work at the direct-to-consumer and patient levels has earned him public recognition. He earned his BS in Marketing from Florida State University and an MBA from Saint Leo University.
VP, Asia Pacific

Matt Lemay

Matt joined MMI in May 2023 and serves as VP for the Asia Pacific region with responsibility for building commercial capabilities and a strong presence in associated local markets. He previously served as Executive Vice President at Rampart, where he led global business efforts in the interventional cardiology space and created partnerships in over 65 countries. He also served as Vice President of International Sales at Corindus, with responsibility for commercial strategy and global partnerships. Matt holds a BA in Business Management and International Business from Eckerd College. He currently serves as a board member at Sentante Endovascular Robotics.
VP, EMEA Sales

Nicola Matz

Nicola is the VP of Sales for EMEA overseeing all commercial activity in the region. He joined the company in November 2021 as a Regional Sales Manager for the DACH countries and was later given responsibility for all of Europe. After successfully raising awareness and driving adoption of the Symani System, his role was expanded to include the full EMEA region. Prior to joining MMI, Nicola held a senior sales role at Intuitive where he supported capital sales deals and provided clinical education to several hundred healthcare professionals who utilized robotic surgical technology in thousands of procedures. Nicola earned his MS in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology from the University of Applied Sciences in Zurich and is pursuing an MBA at the University of St. Gallen.
VP, US Sales

Bryan McDonough

Bryan is the VP of Sales for the U.S. He joined in early 2023 to develop and lead execution of U.S. commercialization strategy. He has over 25 years of experience in med tech, including numerous Sales leadership positions. Most recently, he was the Chief Commercial Officer at RTI Surgical with responsibility for global commercial strategy. Prior to that, he was the VP of U.S. Sales for Corindus Vascular Robotics where he helped create a market for cardiovascular robotic technology. He also held several cardiovascular sales management roles with Boston Scientific. Bryan is a graduate of the University of Georgia where he earned a BS in Business Administration and Finance and an MBA in Sales Management and Corporate Finance.
VP, Commercial Operations

Tara Shea Micko

Tara has served as Vice President of Global Commercial Operations at MMI since December 2022 with responsibility for pricing, contracting, analytics, and process standardization for our customers. Tara spent 15 years at Boston Scientific in roles of increasing responsibility. Most recently, she served as Director of Business Strategy & Execution focused on development of revenue management capabilities and the creation of a contracting Center of Excellence. Tara earned her BA in Business Administration from the University of Prince Edward Island and a MS in International Political Economy from the University of Kent.
CFO

Caleb Moore

Caleb joined MMI in February 2023 as Chief Financial Officer with global responsibility for financial leadership in support of corporate growth objectives. He previously held the roles of Vice President of Finance and Corporate Controller at Vyaire Medical, a global med tech respiratory and ventilation company, where he led their financial planning and capital raising efforts. As Vice President of Finance at Acelity, a global wound management company, he led the company through a comprehensive capital structure refinancing, IPO planning and, ultimately, the successful sale to 3M Healthcare. Caleb holds a BA in Finance from Texas A&M University.
VP, Clinical Excellence and Global Training

Bob Mullins

Bob joined MMI in September 2022 and currently serves as the VP, Clinical Excellence and Global Training. In addition to working closely with key opinion leaders in the field, he leads medical and professional education efforts to support a broad audience of healthcare professionals. Prior to joining the company, Bob spent more than 30 years at Boston Scientific, leading sales regions for the peripheral interventions business and, most recently, as Director of Medical Affairs and Global Education for WATCHMAN. He and his team led comprehensive professional education and training programs targeting more than 2,500 new device users and therapy awareness programs targeting physician communities referring atrial fibrillation patients. Bob holds a BBA with a focus in Marketing from Texas A&M University.
Director, Medical Affairs

Mary-Margaret Payne

Mary-Margaret joined MMI in January 2023 and serves as Director of Medical Affairs overseeing global healthcare professional engagement and strategy. She has over 10 years of MedTech experience, including commercial roles with surgical robotics and start-up companies. Prior to joining MMI, Mary-Margaret drove regional capital acquisition for Procept BioRobotics and Auris, which was purchased by J&J MedTech. She is a graduate of the University of Alabama where she earned a BS in Communication & Information Sciences and a MS in Marketing.
VP, Global R&D and Co-Founder

Massimiliano Simi, PhD

Dr. Simi is one of the founders of MMI. With more than 15 years of experience in the robotic surgery sector, he serves as Executive VP of Research and Development. His passion for innovation led to the creation of the articulated NanoWrist instrument, and he is an inventor on most MMI patents. He continuously promotes the advancement of new products and upgrades to the Symani Surgical System. Before starting MMI, Massimiliano (Max) was a Senior Mechanical Engineer at MEDRA where he provided technical solutions in the fields of robotics and mechatronics to medical device companies based in the Bay Area. Dr. Simi earned a PhD in Innovative Technologies and Medical Robotics from the prestigious University Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa, Italy. He most recently earned an Executive MBA. Max holds an MS and BS in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pisa.
Chief of Staff & VP, Strategic Planning

Alan Simonian

Alan serves as MMI’s Chief of Staff and Vice President of Strategic Planning. He joined the company in 2021 as Director of Global Commercial Operations. He previously held the role of Director of Strategic Planning and Global Commercial Operations at Corindus and served as the Director of Commercial Operations at XACT Robotics. His experience also includes work in the medical device field where he partnered with Corporate Accounts executives at Boston Scientific to develop strategic contracting, pricing, and analytics. Before working in commercial strategy, he was an Associate Consultant at Grant Thornton, a financial advisory services firm. Alan holds a BS in Corporate Finance and Accounting from Bentley University and an MBA from Babson College.
VP, Global Operations

Giancarlo Testaverde

Giancarlo is the VP of Global Operations at MMI with responsibility for the manufacturing, distribution and service of our products. His oversight also includes supply chain management, global facilities, and employee health and safety. Before joining the team in 2019, he was the Manufacturing Director for Medtronic’s respiratory business. His 15+ years of strategic operations experience also includes leadership for varied supply chain initiatives with Titan Italia S.p.A and Federal-Mogul. Giancarlo has a BS in Engineering from Politecnico di Torino and a CPIM-CSC in Supply Chain Management from APICS Northern Colorado. He earned an Executive MBA in Economics and Finance from SDA Bocconi.
VP, Clinical Affairs

John Van Vleet

John has served as the VP of Clinical Affairs since 2021 and is responsible for leading strategic clinical operations. Most recently, he served as the Vice President of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs at Corindus Vascular Robotics, where he oversaw the first inhuman remote coronary study and launched the first global robotics neurovascular study. John’s 30+ years of regulatory and clinical affairs leadership includes orthopedic experience with Zimmer, J&J DePuy Synthes, and Smith & Nephew. He has delivered clinical trial results and regulatory approvals in the U.S., Japan, Korea, and other geographies. John earned a BS in Biology and Chemistry from Purdue University. He is board certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology with a license in Medical Technology and holds a MS in Management and Marketing from Marion College.
