Chairman of the Board
Mr. Landi is a Co-founder and General Partner of Panakes Partners, a venture capital firm headquartered in Milan, Italy. Fabrizio is the founder and former Managing Director and General Manager at Esaote, a leading medical imaging company and also serves as Director of several corporate and institutions including Toscana Life Sciences, Leonardo, and Menarini Diagnostics. Mr. Landi has a Master’s of Science in Bioengineering from Politecnico di Milano.
GIUSEPPE PRISCO, PH.D.
President of the Board
Giuseppe M. Prisco is the CEO and one of the co-founders of MMI S.p.A. Before starting the company, he spent 10 years as the Managing Principal and Principal Engineer at Intuitive Surgical in California. In this role he lead several development projects including the ISI flexible robotics program. He invented and brought to market the daVinci Singles Site product offering for single port surgery. In addition, Giuseppe has 15 years of experience as an individual technical contributor to numerous robotics products such as the 6 axis Adept Robot, the daVinci Classic S and Si surgical robots. He is listed as the inventor on over 100 patents in the controls, robotics, endoscopy and surgery fields. Mr. Prisco holds a degree in Computer Engineering and a Ph.D. in Robotics and Controls from the Scuola Superiore ‘Sant’ Anna’di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento.
Board Member representing Panakes
Mr. Alessio Beverina is a co-founder and General Partner of Panakes Partners, a venture capital (VC) firm headquartered in Milan, Italy. Alessio’s VC experience was developed while working at Sofinnova Partners, one of the largest VC’s in Europe where he progressed from an Analyst to a Partner. His experience included both European and American exposure. Mr. Beverina has a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and an MBA from ESCP-EAP. In addition, Alessio is a Kauffman Fellow.
Since 2014, Gus Castello has successfully provided leadership and consulting services to small medical device companies for developing infrastructure and talent during moments of explosive new product growth. Mr. Castello has 30 years of experience in Product Operations for multi-national, medical device companies bringing disruptive technologies to the dental, orthodontics, and conventional and robotically assisted laparoscopy industries including: Sybron Dental Specialties 1995-1991 (acquired by Danaher), United States Surgical Corporation 1992-2002 (acquired by Medtronic), and most recently, Intuitive Surgical, Inc. 2002-2014. Gus’ previous roles included serving as the Manufacturing Engineering Manager at Sybron (inventors of the first commercially available invisible orthodontic brace), as the GM for Caribbean Operations at United States Surgical Corporation (creators of the first successful laparoscopic stapling technology), and as SVP of Product Operations at Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (creators of world’s most successful laparoscopic surgical robot, the da Vinci Surgical system). Gus graduated from California State University in Long Beach with a degree in Mechanical Engineer.
John Engels is a founder and investor focused on new technology development and commercialization. In addition to MMI, he also sits on the Boards of Oxicool, a company providing disruptive cooling technologies; and BioFlorida, the voice of Florida’s life sciences industry. John is also on the Advisory Board of UF Innovate, supporting an innovation ecosystem at the University of Florida. John is a co-founder of AxoGen, a leading medical technology company dedicated to peripheral nerve repair. He held various leadership roles including managing product development, sales and marketing. He also focused on sourcing, negotiating, and licensing partnerships. Prior to AxoGen, Mr. Engels contributed to entrepreneurship and venture funding projects at the University of Florida. John started his career at CACM, a boutique investment banking firm that pioneered innovative emissions and energy trading markets. He holds an MBA in Management and Operations from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA in Political Science from the University of Chicago.
Board Member Representing Andera Partners
ANDERA PARTNERS (formerly EdRIP, Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners) is a leading European Private Equity House, managing more than €2 billion in Life Sciences Venture Capital, Growth Capital, LBO, and Sponsorless Mezzanine. Olivier is a partner at Andera Partners' life sciences franchise constituted by its BioDiscovery funds. The team manages around Euro 700 m of assets. Previously he was a Partner at EdRIP in the Life Science fund franchise BioDiscovery, Paris based and investing in Europe and US. He also worked at 3i Group plc where he focused purely on investments in biotechnology, biopharma, medtech and healthcare companies. In addition, he is a member of several board for investment companies.
Justin Lynch is a partner in Fountain Healthcare Partners and serves as the CFO of the firm. He joined the team prior to the launch of Fund I in 2008. Justin has a particular interest in the medical device sector and led the firm's investments in MMI S.p.A., Vivasure Medical, Neuravi (acquired by J&J, 2017) and Neurent Medical. He has over 25 years of experience in capital markets, corporate finance, entrepreneurial and venture investing across multiple sectors, particularly focused on life sciences. Justin has a BA in Accounting & Finance from Dublin City University, an MBA from Trinity College Dublin and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
Carlo Alberto Marcoaldi
Mr. Marcoaldi is an investment director with OPES-Low Carbon Enterprise Fund, an AngloItalian charity that invests in energy projects in developing countries, and with CoCreation Ventures plc, an impact investment company in the USA. He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Linari Engineering Srl, Director of Sambatech Srl and Stadel Srl and is a Board Member at Contexo Advisors Srl, Sailsquare Srl and MMI S.p.A. During his career, Mr. Marcoaldi held the position of Vice President at Gastameco Srl and is a Founder/honorary Chairman of ERM Italia S.p.A. For over 25 years, Carlo was a Principal Partner of ERM Group where he held numerous roles including serving as a member of the Executive Committee, CEO of EMEA Region, President of LAC Region, and Global Sales Director for the oil and gas (O&G), mining, manufacturing, and chemical/pharmaceutical solutions. Mr. Marcoaldi was a senior consultant for Environmental, Social, and Health Impact Assessments (ESHIAs). Carlo Alberto also the Production Manager at Montedison, the largest Italian chemical company at the time. Carlo holds a degree in chemical engineering from Sant’Anna School in Pisa, Italy where he later served for one year as an Assistant Professor in Industrial Chemistry.
HANNAH TEICHMANN, PH.D.
Hannah Teichmann is the Vice President of Clinical Development and one of the co-founders of MMI. Before starting the company, she spent 7.5 years as a Patient Advocate to help women and families with healthcare decisions by providing research findings in evidence-based medicine. Dr. Teichmann holds a Ph.D. ini Neuroscience from Stanford University, a Master in Life Sciences from The Open University and a Bachelor of Art in Natural Sciences focused on neuroscience.
