Our Story

Medical Microinstruments S.p.A. (MMI) is dedicated to improving clinical outcomes for patients undergoing microsurgery. It was founded in 2015 and is based in Calci (PI), Italy near Pisa. The company's mission is to enable surgeons around the world to address unmet needs and achieve better outcomes for advanced microsurgical procedures, while reducing the total cost of care for patients, hospitals and society at large.  MMI has developed the first teleoperated robotic platform for suturing in open surgery with wristed microinstruments. It offers the surgeon motion scaling and tremor elimination and aims to facilitate existing procedures as well as enable new applications in the domain of microsurgery. From post-oncological and trauma reconstructions to ophthalmology, organ transplantation and pediatric surgery; MMI is committed to transforming the approach to microsurgery through robotics.   MMI’s Robotic Platform is an investigational device and is not yet commercially available.

After initial funding rounds from Sambatech Angel Investors, in 2018 Medical Microinstruments S.p.A raised €20M in Series A funding to advance its robotic platform for microsurgery. The investor syndicate was led by  Andera Partners , with  Panakes Partners  and  Fountain Healthcare , returning Seed investor Sambatech, and two industry veterans from world leading companies in surgical robotics and peripheral nerve repair.

Fabrizio Landi

Chairman of the Board

Mr. Landi is a Co-founder and General Partner of Panakes Partners, a venture capital firm headquartered in Milan, Italy. Fabrizio is the founder and former Managing Director and General Manager at Esaote, a leading medical imaging company and also serves as Director of several corporations and institutions including Toscana Life Sciences, Leonardo, and Menarini Diagnostics. Mr. Landi has a Master’s of Science in Bioengineering from Politecnico di Milano.

GIUSEPPE PRISCO, PH.D.

Board Member and CEO of MMI

Giuseppe M. Prisco is the CEO and one of the co-founders of MMI S.p.A. Before starting the company, he spent 10 years as the Managing Principal and Principal Engineer at Intuitive Surgical in California. In this role he lead several development projects including the ISI flexible robotics program. He invented, and brought to market, the daVinci Single Site product offering for single port surgery. In addition, Giuseppe has 15 years of experience as an individual technical contributor to numerous robotic products such as the 6 axis Adept Robot and the da Vinci Classic S and Si surgical robots. He is listed as the inventor on over 100 patents in controls, robotics, endoscopy and surgery. Mr. Prisco holds a degree in Computer Engineering and a Ph.D. in Robotics and Controls from the Scuola Superiore ‘Sant’ Anna’di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento.

HANNAH TEICHMANN, PH.D.

Board Member Representing MMI

Hannah Teichmann is the Vice President of Clinical Development and one of the co-founders of MMI. She is leading the preclinical and clinical validation of MMI's product, coordinating preclinical and in vivo studies, and garnering feedback from end-users for continuous product development and improvement. Before founding MMI, she had been active in patient care and advocacy, consulting with clients on evidence-based medicine and healthcare decisions in women’s health. She has published in internationally peer-reviewed journals including Nature Neuroscience. Hannah has a Bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Stanford.

Alessio Beverina

Board Member Representing Panakes

Mr. Alessio Beverina is a co-founder and General Partner of Panakes Partners, a venture capital (VC) firm headquartered in Milan, Italy. Alessio’s VC experience was developed while working at Sofinnova Partners, one of the largest VC’s in Europe where he progressed from an Analyst to a Partner. His experience included both European and American exposure. Mr. Beverina has a Master’s of Science in Chemical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and an MBA from ESCP-EAP. In addition, Alessio is a Kauffman Fellow.

Olivier Litzka

Board Member Representing Andera Partners

Olivier is a partner at Andera Partners' life sciences franchise constituted by its BioDiscovery funds. Andera Partners, formerly EdRIP, Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners, is a leading European Private Equity House, managing more than €2B in Life Sciences Venture Capital, Growth Capital, LBO, and Sponsorless Mezzanine. The team manages around €700M of assets. Previously he was a Partner at EdRIP in the Life Science fund franchise BioDiscovery, based in Paris and investing in Europe and in the US. He also worked at 3i Group PLC where he focused purely on investments in biotechnology, biopharma, medtech and healthcare companies. In addition, he represents Andera on several boards.

justin lynch

Board Member Representing Fountain Healthcare

Justin Lynch is a partner in Fountain Healthcare Partners and serves as the CFO of the firm. He joined the team prior to the launch of Fund I in 2008. Justin has a particular interest in the medical device sector and led the firm's investments in MMI S.p.A., Vivasure Medical, Neuravi  (acquired by J&J, 2017) and Neurent Medical. He has over 25 years of experience in capital markets, corporate finance, and entrepreneurial and venture investing across multiple sectors, particularly focused on life sciences. Justin has a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting & Finance from Dublin City University, an MBA from Trinity College Dublin and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

Carlo Alberto Marcoaldi

Board Member Representing Angel Investors

Mr. Marcoaldi is an investment director with OPES-Low Carbon Enterprise Fund, an AngloItalian charity that invests in energy projects in developing countries, and with CoCreation Ventures plc, an impact investment company in the US. He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Linari Engineering Srl, Director of Sambatech Srl and Stadel Srl and is a Board Member at Contexo Advisors Srl, Sailsquare Srl and MMI S.p.A. During his career, Mr. Marcoaldi held the position of Vice President at Gastameco Srl and is a Founder/Honorary Chairman of ERM Italia S.p.A. For over 25 years, Carlo was a Principal Partner of ERM Group where he held numerous roles including serving as a member of the Executive Committee, CEO of EMEA Region, President of LAC Region, and Global Sales Director for the oil and gas (O&G), mining, manufacturing, and chemical/pharmaceutical solutions. Mr. Marcoaldi was a Senior Consultant for Environmental, Social, and Health Impact Assessments (ESHIAs). Carlo Alberto was also the Production Manager at Montedison, the largest Italian chemical company at the time. Carlo holds a degree in chemical engineering from Sant’Anna School in Pisa, Italy where he later served for one year as an Assistant Professor in Industrial Chemistry.

Gus Castello

Independent Board Member

Since 2014, Gus Castello has successfully provided leadership and consulting services to small medical device companies for developing infrastructure and talent during moments of explosive new product growth. Mr. Castello has 30 years of experience in Product Operations for multi-national, medical device companies bringing disruptive technologies to the dental, orthodontics, and conventional and robotic assisted laparoscopy industries including: Sybron Dental Specialties 1995-1991 (acquired by Danaher), United States Surgical Corporation 1992-2002 (acquired by Medtronic), and most recently, Intuitive Surgical, Inc. 2002-2014. Previously, Gus was the Manufacturing Engineering Manager at Sybron (inventors of the first commercially available invisible orthodontic brace), the GM for Caribbean Operations at United States Surgical Corporation (creators of the first successful laparoscopic stapling technology), and SVP of Product Operations at Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (creators of world’s most successful laparoscopic surgical robot, the da Vinci Surgical system). Gus graduated from California State University in Long Beach with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineer.

Independent Board Member

John Engels is a founder and investor focused on new technology development and commercialization. John co-founded AxoGen (NASDAQ:AXGN, Russell 2000), a leading medical technology company dedicated to peripheral nerve repair. John started his career at CACM, a boutique investment banking firm. In addition to MMI, John is a Board member of BioFlorida, the voice of Florida’s life sciences industry; and Oxicool, a privately-held company providing disruptive cooling technologies. John is on the advisory board of ECM Therapeutics, providing regenerative medicine through natural biomaterials; and UF Innovate, supporting an innovation ecosystem at the Univeristy of Florida. He holds a MBA in Management and Operations from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA in Political Science from the University of Chicago.

Gianluca Landi

CFO

Mr. Landi has expertise in accounting and implementing reporting activities for obtaining reliable and timely data. Throughout his career he has developed a strong focus on product cost rationalization. In addition, he held leading roles related to production control systems, mergers and acquisitions, crisis management, corporate reorganizations (including union relations), and corporate culture change. His knowledge of Lean Production has been vital for establishing more efficient and cost-effective production flows in the organizations where he has worked. Gianluca holds a Master’s Degree in Audit & Management Control from Pisa University.

Mauro Ercolani

VP Quality & Regulatory Affairs

Mr. Ercolani has a multidisciplinary technical background and vast experience in Regulatory Affairs. Early in his career, he worked as a Project Manager and Chief Technical Officer for innovation related projects in the biomedical field. Prior to joining MMI, Mauro served as Director of Regulatory Affairs at LivaNova where he was responsible for the global regulatory activities for the Cardiac Surgery Business Unit. In addition, he is a co-inventor on several international patents. At MMI, Mauro is responsible for shaping the quality system and designing a global regulatory strategy that leverages the clinical value of the robotic platform. Mauro holds a Master’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering from La Sapienza University in Rome.

donato Mazzeo

Vice President Strategic Projects

Mr. Mazzeo is an entrepreneur and seasoned executive with over 15 years of experience in high-tech and medical device companies. Donato is a passionate supporter/evangelist of innovations in the healthcare industry and introducing new products in the market. Prior to joining MMI, he served as a Board Member for several companies in the public sector and in 2010, he founded and became the CEO of WinMedical, a medical device company focused on monitoring patients’ vital signs. Donato’s contributions drove the company’s success from the start-up phase through global commercialization, when the company was acquired in 2017. He earned an MBA in Innovation from Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Engineering.

Jamie Milas

Vice President of Marketing

Ms. Milas is a marketing professional who has lived and worked in the United States, Belgium, France and Italy. Her career has evolved around several strategic marketing roles, primarily in diagnostic imaging, 3D surgical planning software, and patient-specific implants/instruments. She served as the Global Marketing Manager at Materialise for 8 years before becoming Vice President of Global Marketing at EOS imaging where she continued to lead a team of marketing professionals and product managers. Jamie holds a Bachelor of Science and an MBA in International Business and Marketing from the University of Dayton.

 
 
 
 

Massimiliano Simi, PH.D.

Vice President of R&D

Massimiliano Simi is the Vice President of R&D and one of the founders of MMI. Before starting the company, he was a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer at MEDRA srl. Massimiliano is listed as an inventor on 8 patents related to medical devices and surgical robotics. Dr. Simi has a Ph.D in Innovative Technologies and Medical Robotics from Scuolo Superiore Sant’Anna as well as a Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Universita di Pisa. Giancarlo Testaverde

Vice President of Operations

Giancarlo Testaverde is the Vice President of Operations at MMI. Before joining the team, he spent 4 years as the Manufacturing Director at Medtronic for the entire respiratory product range (over 1,500 sku’s) where he was responsible for nearly 600 employees. Simultaneously, he served as the CEO of Mallinckrodt DAR srl. In addition, he was the Director of Operations at Titan Italia S.P.A. for 4 years, Director of Quality and Plant Manager at Federal-Mogul for 5 years and the Logistics Manager at Valeo for over 8 years. Mr. Testaverde has a Bachelor of Engineering from Politecnico di Torino, a CPIM - CSC in Supply Chain Management from APICS Northern Colorado and an Executive MBA in Economics and Finance from SDA Bocconi.
